Light tickled the edge of her curtains, and she rolled over to look for Argus. Tears pricked her eyes when she discovered the sheets behind her were cool. He was gone.
She wiped her eyes and headed for the shower. If the mist was in her face, her tears would be undetectable, even to herself.
She had to get herself together. She would be working with him at six, and he wouldn’t know why she was upset.
She left the bathroom wrapped in a towel with another working at her curls.
Argus was sitting on her bed, and he had two square boxes with him, as well as some coffee cups.
“Since I didn’t think either of us would be up to cook, I brought breakfast to you.”
Dani blinked in surprise. She had already grieved him, and here he was.
He patted the bed. “Come on. Let’s have a picnic and then change the sheets.”
She moved toward him with the slow jerky patterns of a marionette. “The sheets are fine.”
She settled next to him and took the box he handed to her.
He leaned in and kissed her. “They are fine for now. Who knows what will happen next?”
He waggled his eyebrows, and she giggled. He had liberated some utensils from her kitchen, and she opened the box to find blueberry pancakes drowned in syrup with a side of sausages.
“There is a lot of syrup here.” She gave him a wry look.
“I have plans for it.”
It was more of a promise than a threat, but she was careful to save as much as she could. When she set the box aside, he handed her her coffee, and she slurped happily.
“You looked surprised to see me.” He leaned against her headboard and smiled.
“I was. I thought you had crept out and forgotten all about me.”
“I don’t think I will be forgetting anything. It isn’t every day that I get to make love to a reindeer.”
Her coffee wavered in her hand. She cleared her throat. “I beg your pardon?”
“Well, I wasn’t sure that first moment, but now that I have seen those delicate horns coming out of your head, I am fairly certain. Dasher?”
She scooted back, but he grabbed her ankle. “How do you...”
He sighed and slight shifts in his appearance took over. His face grew leaner, his body more graceful and his ears pointed through the thick waves of his hair. “Argus Breathewaite, at your service.”
“You are an elf.”
“I am.”
“From the workshop.” Her mind was scrambling to make sense of it.
“Yes. Did you think that no one would come for you?”
“Well, I did write Santa a pretty nasty letter. He probably wasn’t impressed.”
“He was very impressed. He was just surprised that no one had mentioned anything earlier.”
“How could we? We never have any contact with anyone until the week before Christmas.”
“Will you come back?” His thumb was massaging her instep.
She blinked. Of course they were coming back. How did he not know that? They just wanted their time to live, to become real beings in the eyes of
